The City of Miami is spending $8 million to convert the recently closed La Quinta Inn at 10821 Caribbean Blvd. in Cutler Bay, into permanent housing for unsheltered seniors. This initiative, developed in partnership with the Miami-Dade Homeless Trust, is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to address homelessness, particularly among its senior population.

The $8 million will be used to renovate the property into a safe and supportive living space. The facility will provide housing and tailored services to meet the specific needs of seniors who have experienced homelessness, including healthcare, social services, and support for independent living.

The project comes as Miami, like many cities across the country, faces a growing homelessness crisis. Shelters are operating at full capacity, and long-term housing solutions are in high demand. City officials say the La Quinta project represents a key step in the city’s goal to reduce homelessness and provide stable, permanent housing for vulnerable residents.

Miami Mayor Francis X. Suarez highlighted the importance of the initiative, saying, “Transforming the La Quinta Inn into permanent housing for unsheltered seniors is not just about providing a roof—it’s about restoring dignity and ensuring they have the support they need to thrive.”

The La Quinta project is part of the city’s larger goal of achieving “functional zero” homelessness, where every individual in need of shelter has access to permanent housing. The city plans to continue working with local organizations and the Homeless Trust to address homelessness and provide long-term solutions.

Renovations to the La Quinta Inn are expected to begin soon, with the first residents expected to move in within months. City officials say the project will serve as a model for addressing homelessness in the community, particularly for seniors who face unique challenges in securing stable housing.
