Construction of a new San Carlos Bridge over Big Carlos Pass is expected to begin by late spring, according to Lee County officials.

Construction is expected to happen during the spring. Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) engineers say work will last two to three years.

The project cost is $90.3 million and the U.S. Federal Highway Administration has committed $25-million.

The new structure will have a life span of about 75 years.

Lee County commissioners have awarded a contract to Superior Construction Co. to build the bridge linking Lovers Key and Estero Boulevard over Big Carlos Pass. The new structure will replace a drawbridge built about 60 years ago that had reached the end of its useful life along Fort Myers Beach.

The new span will arch 60 feet over the water and the project will include a fishing pier, a six-foot wide sidewalk and designated bike lanes.
