Drivers and freight haulers in Central Florida will see congestion relief with a series of projects along the Interstate 4 corridor, including 17 miles of new express lanes in Hillsborough County and a 100-space truck parking facility in Polk County.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) said the new express lanes, running in both directions between Interstate 75 and County Line Road, will separate long-distance traffic from local commuters, improving travel times and reliability.

Construction on the express lanes is expected to begin in 2028, a decade earlier than originally scheduled under the state’s Moving Florida Forward infrastructure initiative.

FDOT officials also announced the start of construction at the SunTrax testing facility to support Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), a new mode of aerial transportation that will include a network of commercial vertiports. The facility will serve as a test bed for research and development of the emerging technology.

Governor Ron DeSantis said the projects demonstrate how Florida is “making record infrastructure investments and completing projects ahead of schedule.” FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E., added that the state’s efforts along the I-4 corridor “will continue to deliver on our commitment to accelerate congestion relief for residents and visitors.”
