Construction is officially underway on the new Micanopy Library following a well-attended groundbreaking ceremony that drew more than 150 community members, students, and project partners to the site.
Scherer Construction shared highlights of the celebration on social media, noting the strong community turnout and enthusiasm for the project.
“Wonderful groundbreaking this morning for the new Micanopy Library! Over 150 people came out to celebrate, including students, the Micanopy Manatees,” the company wrote.
The ceremony brought together representatives from the Alachua County Library District, construction teams, Friends of the Library Alachua County, and local residents, all marking the start of what officials described as a significant new investment in the Town of Micanopy.
“Libraries are such an incredible asset to a community,” Scherer Construction said in its post. “They provide an open and safe place for learning, programming, connection, and of course, reading. There was so much excitement in the air as everyone grabbed a shovel, tossed some dirt, and shared smiles while learning more about the future building.”
The project represents a continuation of a long-standing local commitment to public access to information and community programming in Micanopy. The existing branch has been part of the town’s history for decades, with roots dating back to 1959 when it first opened in a doctor’s waiting room through the efforts of the Micanopy Friends of the Library.
At the time, the collection held roughly 3,000 books before moving to a new site in the town centre in 1960. The library later relocated to its current location inside Micanopy Town Hall in 1973, where it has operated for more than 50 years.
The current branch celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2019, highlighting its long-standing role in the community’s cultural and educational life.
Officials say the new facility will continue that legacy while providing expanded space and modern amenities to support programming, learning, and community engagement for future generations.
