Charlotte County officials and project partners recently celebrated the groundbreaking of two new fire stations to support the region’s continued growth.Construction firm Wharton-Smith is serving as construction manager for both the new Fire Station 17 in South County and the replacement of Fire Station 6 in Punta Gorda. The projects represent a significant investment in public safety infrastructure as county leaders work to ensure emergency services keep pace with rapid residential and commercial development.

“We’re proud to partner with Charlotte County as construction manager on both projects to help deliver critical infrastructure that will support first responders and enhance community safety for generations to come,” Wharton-Smith said following the groundbreaking ceremonies.

The replacement Fire Station 6, located at 27589 Disston Avenue in Punta Gorda, will address several deficiencies associated with the existing facility. County officials have identified the current station as undersized and unable to adequately support current and future operational demands.

Among the challenges facing the existing building are a lack of hurricane-hardening features, insufficient storage capacity for apparatus, equipment and supplies, and inadequate accommodations for personnel, including limited kitchen and support facilities.

The new station is expected to provide modernized space designed to improve operational efficiency, resiliency during severe weather events, and overall working conditions for firefighters and emergency personnel.

The South County Fire Station 17 project is intended to help maintain emergency response standards as population growth continues throughout Charlotte County. Officials have noted that ongoing development and new home construction in areas such as Tucker’s Grade and South Gasparilla Road are increasing demand for emergency services.

Fire Station 17 is part of a broader effort to expand emergency service coverage as development continues across southern portions of the county. Officials have indicated that future station locations and service areas will be evaluated based on growth patterns and community needs.
