Tampa CRA board approves $14 million to repair and restore iconic Tampa Theatre.

Named one of the most “beautiful cinemas” in the world, the Tampa Theatre is receiving much-needed repair and restoration improvements to protect and fully preserve the iconic landmark.  Phase I of the restoration started in 2017 and addressed substantial infrastructure needs to the interior and exterior of the historical building.

The Tampa Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) formally adopted the Community Advisory Committee’s vote to support the project by moving forward with Tampa Theatre’s $14 million funding request for phase II of the proposed restoration plan.

“Our Goal is to present a fully restored Tampa Theatre to the community in time for the Theatre’s 100th anniversary in October of 2026,” said John Bell, President & CEO, Tampa Theatre.

Tampa Theatre averages 160,000 visitors yearly, providing over 246 Full-time jobs and generating over eight hundred thousand dollars in state and local tax revenue. Some items that will be restored and added to the theatre include a second screen room, support spaces, increased production space enhanced technology and additional patron amenities.

“The CRA Board voted unanimously to approve the funding for the Phase II restoration of the Tampa Theatre,” said CRA Chairwoman Lynn Hurtak. “The CRA support will ensure that the Tampa Theatre continues to be a landmark in Downtown Tampa and allows everyone to enjoy its unique cultural experience,”
