Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer has announced new developments in city’s efforts to establish a permanent memorial at the Pulse Nightclub site, launching a stakeholder and community engagement process to honor the victims, survivors, and everyone affected by the 2016 tragedy.

The city will work with Dr. Larry Schooler to oversee a process involving victims’ families, survivors, and the community. Dr. Schooler brings experience from similar projects like the Virginia Beach 5-31 Memorial Committee and the San Leandro Steven Taylor Sanctity of Life Pavilion.

Outreach will guide the formation of a Memorial Advisory Committee, which will include representatives from victims’ families, survivors, and other stakeholders to help select a conceptual design for the memorial by the end of the year.

Also, the city will continue the annual Pulse Remembrance Ceremony and CommUNITY Rainbow Run in 2024. The Remembrance Ceremony will take place on June 12 at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, preceded by the ringing of 49 bells at First United Methodist Church Orlando.
