Community leaders gathered this week to break ground on Hardee County’s new Emergency Operations Center (EOC), a $9.5 million facility designed to improve coordination and response during major emergencies.

The new 14,000-square-foot, single-story building will replace the county’s existing EOC, which sustained significant damage during Hurricane Ian in 2022. The project is being funded through a state grant from the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

Peace River Electric Cooperative, Inc. joined local officials at the ceremony, highlighting the strong partnerships among public agencies and utilities that work together to keep residents safe and prepared.

Architects Design Group (ADG) has been contracted to design the facility, which will sit on a 1.7-acre site in downtown Wauchula. The design includes an operations center, situation and breakout rooms, a press room, administrative offices, workspaces, restrooms, logistics storage, radio and GIS areas, and a public lobby.

The building will feature 12-inch cast-in-place concrete walls, engineered to withstand winds from a Category 5 hurricane. A new emergency generator will provide full backup power when storms disrupt regular electrical service.

The site will also connect to nearby county facilities, including the administration and records buildings. A new parking lot is being developed to accommodate both staff and visitors.

Construction is expected to ensure that Hardee County’s emergency management team can maintain operations and coordination even during the most severe weather events.

“We look forward to continuing our strong partnership with those working to keep our community safe and prepared,” Peace River Electric Cooperative said in a statement.
