A major transportation project expected to improve connectivity and support long-term growth in Palm Coast officially moved into the construction phase with a groundbreaking ceremony for the Matanzas Loop Road project on May 14.
The project, which will be constructed by C.W. Matthews Contracting Co., will create a new roadway west of U.S. 1 and include a bridge crossing over the Florida East Coast Railway, improvements city officials say will enhance safety and traffic flow on Palm Coast’s west side.
Backed by approximately $125 million in state appropriations and FDOT funding, the project is part of a broader transportation initiative aimed at creating a western beltway for Palm Coast and improving regional mobility.
City officials said the roadway is expected to become an important component of the future regional transportation network, particularly as plans advance for connections tied to the new County Road 2209 system linking the Orlando and Jacksonville regions.
Palm Coast City Manager Mike McGlothlin said the project reflects years of planning and coordination.
“Projects like this take time. They take planning, coordination, problem-solving, and persistence,” said McGlothlin. “It’s about building something that serves our community today and for generations to come. It’s about making sure Palm Coast grows in a way that is connected, safe, and built to last.”
The city recognized a number of public and private organizations involved in the project, including FDOT, the Florida East Coast Railway, Florida Power & Light, the City of Bunnell, engineers, consultants and contractors.
Special recognition was also given to project partners and contractors C.W. Matthews Contracting Co., England Thims & Miller and Eisman & Russo for helping organize the event and providing refreshments and commemorative items for attendees.
Matanzas Loop Road is expected to support future mobility, transportation connectivity and economic development opportunities across the region.
