Hernando County Fire Rescue has broken ground on Fire Station No. 15 in Weeki Wachee, marking the first expansion of the county’s fire station network in more than two decades.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held Aug. 12 for the new station, which will add another emergency response location to the county’s system as Hernando County continues to grow.
Bandes Construction Company, the project’s contractor, said the ground-up facility will include a three-bay apparatus wing and crew quarters with a kitchen, living area, laundry facilities, hazardous wash area, storage and restrooms.
The station will be constructed on a footer and stem wall foundation and will feature painted concrete masonry unit and stucco finishes, structural steel and a single-ply roofing system.
While Hernando County has invested in recent years in replacing three existing fire stations with modern facilities, Fire Station No. 15 represents an expansion of the county’s emergency response network rather than a replacement project.
County officials said the new station will increase the capacity of Hernando County Fire Rescue to provide fire protection and emergency medical services as the community grows.
“This groundbreaking represents something different: an expansion of our fire rescue system,” Hernando County Fire Rescue said ahead of the ceremony. “This new station adds another service location to HCFR’s network, expanding our capacity to deliver fire protection and emergency medical services as Hernando County continues to grow.”
The project represents an investment in public safety and emergency response capability, providing additional infrastructure to support firefighters and the communities they serve.
