Florida seeks contractor for $142.5 million automated vehicle test track facility

The Florida Department of Transportation is seeking a contractor to provide construction engineering and inspection services for SunTrax, a self-driving car testing facility being built on a 400-plus-acre site in Auburndale.

The automated vehicle testing facility will be used to test autonomous vehicles in simulated situations such as rain, fog and smoke.

Phase 2 is expected to take place in fall and is estimated to cost $100 million. The $42 million oval track for Phase 2 will have general purpose lanes and express lanes once it opens

Here are important dates for contractors wanting to work on Phase 2:

  • Response deadline date: April 8
  • Shortlist selection date: April 29
  • Final selection meeting date: May 23

Meanwhile, work is underway on Phase 1. The 2.25-mile oval track designed for high-speed travel is set to complete this summer.
