Construction begins on new animal shelter in Tampa

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay, a nonprofit that provides shelter homeless and hurt animals, announced the start of the construction on its new animal shelter.

The current shelter, which houses at least 8,600 animals each year, is more than 50 years old. The new shelter is being built at 3607 North Armenia Ave. in Tampa.

The 42,000-sq.-ft. facility will have central heating and air, isolation space to contain contagious disease, and nursery accommodations for under aged puppies, kittens, and nursing moms. It is named the DeBartolo Family Animal Shelter as the DeBartolo family, well-known for their compassion for animals and investment in community, have made a significant contribution to the project.

The society expects that it will be able to save an additional 2,000 animals annually with the new shelter.
