In June, Southwest Florida’s construction sector added 1,500 jobs, a 5.5% annual growth rate that nearly matched statewide gains, the Herald Tribune reports.

A report from the Associated General Contractors of America shows that the Sarasota-Manatee and Charlotte County metro areas were among 272 out of 358 nationwide where construction employment rose over the year.

Construction employment rose by 1,400 jobs, or 6%, to a total of 24,800 in June in Sarasota-Manatee.

However, employment in the region’s labor-parched building trades remains thousands of workers short of its peak in 2006 before the real estate crash, according to the Tribune.
