Seminole State College of Florida has selected Charles Perry Partners Inc. to build a $24 million student services building at the college’s Sanford/Lake Mary Campus. Song + Associates Inc. is the project architect.
Earlier, the college announced that Florida’s 2015-16 budget, signed by Gov. Rick Scott in June, includes $11.5 million for the building to replace the original structure on the 50-year-old campus.
“We are grateful for the very strong support we received from Gov. Scott, the legislative leadership and every member of the Seminole County legislative delegation,” said Dr. E. Ann McGee, Seminole State’s president. “They know that this building will be our ‘front door’ in generating more degrees and certificates, and meeting the workforce needs of our community. Our students and team appreciate this great support.”
The new building will replace a student services building that was built as a data processing center in the mid-1970s, when the College had about 14,000 students. The current building is far too small to serve Seminole State today, McGee says. More than 30,000 students attend the college.
Seminole State expects to start site work during the December break, with an official groundbreaking in February
The facility, which will be built near the Wayne M. Densch Partnership Center and the planned wellness center, will serve as a one-stop for students, offering registration, enrollment and veterans services, academic advising, student life, support for DirectConnect to UCF students and career development all under one roof.
Currently, student services are located in six buildings on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus.
The project was first funded with $250,000 for planning in the 2009-10 budget.
The college has several other projects in the works, including:
- A new $10 million, 40,000 sq. ft. wellness center, also at the Sanford/Lake Mary campus. The college is in negotiation with North Carolina-based Keith Corp., and if negotiations are finalized, construction could start in November
- At the Altamonte Springs campus, there are plans for a $50 million, 200,000 sq. ft. seven story building, with retail stores, classrooms, and other co-tenants, through an agreement between the college and Skanska USA Building Inc.
