PREMIER Design + Build Group has developed a thriving business since opening its Plantation, FL office in 2014 – and the national design/build contractor’s growth is likely to continue as it adds new clients to its growing base of repeat and referred clients.

Omar Lopez, who joined the organization as its southeastern market leader in 2018, says he truly enjoys working for PREMIER as the business expands from industrial projects to retail, commercial and specialized initiatives, including tenant fit-ups and cannabis facilities.

“In the last two years, we’ve completed two million square feet of buildings in the southeast,” he said. Some major projects are from clients who have done business with PREMIER for many years from its head office in Itasca, IL (near Chicago), including Ozinga, which provides concrete, building materials and logistics.

However, as well the contractor has developed much southeastern work for newer clients who appreciate PREMIER’S no-surprise approach to doing business.

Lopez said PREMIER takes much care at the beginning to assess site conditions and clients’ requirements, delving into details to come up with a project plan.

“When we see a project, we go into the details of all the possible options, and we provide the owner with preliminary numbers, so they can know the exact expectations – and as the project progresses, we make sure we deliver the work at the same budget (or less) than we gave them in the beginning.

“There are no surprises with higher costs– and they may in fact get get lower costs.”
Of course, even with planning, conditions change. Sometimes after the job starts, a client discovers new tenant requirements, or a project must be completed on an accelerated schedule. Here, Lopez says, PREMIER goes out of its way to find the most effective solutions.

Lopez describes PREMIER as a family-focused business, which cares about its employees and works within a company-wide “one office” model. This means that staffers in one region can call on specialized assistance anywhere either at the head office or from another of PREMIER’s four regional office locations, and in some cases, the project manager based in one office might handle work within another office’s area. (Lopez for example, is working on projects in New Jersey and Massachusetts, even though there is a regional PREMIER office in New Jersey.)

The company, founded in 2004 by Alan Zocher, Brian Paul and Alec Zocher, reported revenue of $238 million in 2018. It expanded to the Miami area in 2014.

Projects currently underway include two retail locations for a chain of European grocery stores expanding its US presence, the Keating Resources Tampa Fulfillment Centre, tenant improvements for Harper Limbach LLC, and a project with five tenant improvements within a single building.

The Keating Resources structure is the first LEED certified industrial building in Tampa, Lopez said. “It is in a special location right in front of Tampa Bay.” The parking area and roadways leading to the building are being built with concrete rather than asphalt to handle the location’s high load-bearing vehicle requirements.

“We have a breadth of experience doing commercial build-outs, retail spaces, and healthcare as well as industrial projects,” said Lopez. “Project diversity is a highlight of our company. We can approach any type of situation, adapting specific projects with different clients.”
