Miami International Airport (MIA) has received nearly $100 million in federal funding to advance its multi-billion-dollar modernization program.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced the funding Wednesday, highlighting $70 million from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and $24 million from the Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG). The grants, awarded in back-to-back weeks, represent the largest amount of federal funding allocated to any U.S. airport this year.

“MIA is the gateway to our community and one of our greatest economic engines, so securing nearly $100 million in FAA grants in just two weeks is a tremendous win for Miami-Dade County,” Levine Cava said. “This historic investment will help us modernize MIA to meet the needs of our growing county, create good-paying jobs, and ensure that our airport remains resilient, sustainable and competitive for generations to come.”

The funding will support the airport’s Future-Ready Modernization in Action (M.I.A.) program, a $9-billion capital improvement plan that will overhaul much of the facility over the next decade.

Projects include runway and taxiway upgrades, roadway improvements, terminal expansions, gate and boarding bridge replacements, and the renovation of parking structures. The program also calls for sustainability initiatives such as energy-efficient systems, renewable energy installations and storm-resiliency upgrades.

MIA Director and CEO Ralph Cutie said the grants will support projects critical to maintaining the airport’s role as a global passenger and cargo hub.

“These FAA grants will support projects critical to MIA’s mission to remain one of the world’s leading global gateways for passengers and cargo while preparing for future aviation demands,” Cutie said.

MIA is one of the busiest airports in the U.S., serving record passenger volumes in recent years.
