In 2013, states passed 437 laws and resolutions involving immigration, with North Carolina lawmakers approving just five of them, according to a report by the National Conference of State Legislatures.

The nationwide total marked a 64% increase over 267 laws and resolutions passed by state lawmakers across the country in 2012.

North Carolina’s legislation included a law clarifying which contractors must use the E-Verify system and studying other illegal immigration issues. State lawmakers also passed a provision in the Farm Act of 2013 exempting migrant housing from installation of automatic sprinkler systems, provided that it meets certain requirements, including being one-story.
