Grand opening of Miami $155 million medical center

On November 18 the University of Miami held a grand opening for its Lennar Foundation Medical Center. On December 5, Miami will see its first patients at the $155 million project located in the Coral Gables Campus.

The 200,000 sq. ft. ambulatory center will provide easy access to UHealth’s leading physicians for students, faculty, staff and surrounding communities.

South Florida Business Journal quoted Marshall Ames, chairman of The Lennar Foundation as saying: “Lennar was born 60 years ago, in 1954, building homes in the South Dade community. Our first office was in a home we built on Coral Way and SW 87th Ave. Our roots, and our home office, have been here for all of those 60 years.”

He went on to say founder Leonard Miller, for whom the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine is named, “created The Lennar Foundation in 1989 with the express purpose of giving back to the communities where we have built homes, the communities that helped us become the company we are. It is therefore somewhat full circle that today, at The Lennar Foundation Medical Center, we can help the residents of South Dade receive quality medical care right here in their community.”

The Lennar Foundation donated $50 million towards the project which was designed by Perkins + Will to be LEED certified and has been built by OHL USA.

The first floor features the 1925 Cafe – named after the year UM was founded – a Walgreens pharmacy, a blood work lab, and an imaging department with heavy-duty machines such as MRI and CT scanners.

The facility will also offer urgent care, outpatient surgery, men’s and women’s health, sports medicine, physical therapy, diagnostic imaging, radiation oncology, and other UHealth sub-specialties. Future plans include moving the UM Student Health Center from the academic core of the campus to the new UHealth Coral Gables facility, giving students convenient access to the UM medical specialties under one roof.

The facility has 26 recovery bays, and patients can stay for up to 23 hours. It also has private chemotherapy treatment rooms, oncology, mammography and a sports medicine department, all of which will serve both the public and UM athletes. The physical therapy center has both indoor and outdoor space.
