The Global UCF Building

The SchenkelShultz-designed Global UCF Building for the University of Central Florida has won the 2017 LEED NC (New Construction) Project of the Year Award from the US Green Building Council (UGBC) — Central Florida Region.

The project team also included TLC Engineering for architecture as the MEP engineer, Walter P. Moore & Associates as the structural engineer, Harris Civil Engineers as the civil engineer, VHB as the campus planner/landscape architect, and Clancy & Theys Construction Company as the construction manager.

The LEED Gold certified, $12.7 million building “required a balance of innovative planning, design and sustainability,” the award submission reported.

“At the start of design, the goal was to achieve LEED Silver certification for the project. In the end, the project achieved LEED Gold certification surpassing the expectation and original project goal. The energy saving design solutions for the building included a cost-efficient and effective chilled beam system, optimized glazing and LED lighting. Through collaboration with the owner, the design team opted to use a chilled beam system as the primary means of cooling for the building, which is four-times more efficient than traditional air distribution.”

Designed to bring all of UCF’s international activities under one roof, the three-story, 54,780 sq. ft. facility features 21st century classrooms, study rooms, academic advisement areas, informal collaboration zones, offices and a café.
