Multifamily builders in Florida can now receive up to $1,000 per unit for meeting ENERGY STAR standards under a new incentive program launched by Duke Energy Florida.
The utility is offering a $500 rebate for each individually metered condominium, apartment, duplex or townhome unit that achieves ENERGY STAR certification. Builders can also combine the rebate with an existing $500 federal tax credit available through ENERGY STAR.
Beazer Homes is the first builder to participate in the initiative. The Orlando-area company is constructing 85 certified homes across two townhome developments in Oviedo: Aulin Square and Towns at Greenleaf.
Melissa Seixas, Duke Energy Florida’s state president, said the program is designed to encourage builders to prioritize efficiency at a time of significant growth in multifamily housing.
“By focusing on builder incentives in this area of high growth, we can also help customers save on their monthly energy bills when they purchase or rent an ENERGY STAR certified unit,” Seixas said.
To qualify, builders must register as a Duke Energy trade ally, complete certification requirements, and submit verification forms for each unit.
ENERGY STAR-certified homes are at least 10 per cent more efficient than those built to code and typically achieve a 20 per cent energy savings, according to the program.
Steve Cervino, Beazer Homes’ area president, said his company aims to build beyond minimum standards.
“We’re proud to build above and beyond ENERGY STAR standards so homeowners can experience healthier, more quiet, and more comfortable living spaces,” Cervino said.
The program is available to multifamily new construction builders across Duke Energy Florida’s service territory, which covers 13,000 square miles and serves two million customers.
