Groundbreaking took place on March 5 for the new 8,100-sq. ft. Lighthouse Point Community Center in Dan Witt Park.

The city approved a contract with Kauffman Lynn Construction (KL) for a “guaranteed minimum price” of about $2.5 million for the center last summer. The structure will include a multi-use community center with a concession kitchen, youth game room, two multi-purpose rooms and new restrooms.

The project is scheduled for completion in January, 2022.

Speakers at the groundbreaking event included Mayor Glenn Troast, Kaufman Lynn Construction CEO Mike Kaufman, recreation director Becky Word, city representative Bill Gallo, and Jess Sowards of Currie Sowards Aguila Architects.

“Demonstrating the Mayor and city leaders’ commitment to the local workforce, the group was joined by representatives from five local Lighthouse Point businesses who have been brought on as subcontractors on the project,” a KL statement said.

“Outdoor spaces and open-air facilities contribute tremendously to making our communities vibrant, exciting places to live,” said Kaufman. “We’re thrilled to break ground on the new community center because it offers so many opportunities for people of all ages in Lighthouse Point to gather and enjoy recreational activities together.”

Dan Witt Park covers six acres in Lighthouse Point and is home to many youth sports leagues in Lighthouse Point. It boasts basketball, tennis and sand volleyball courts, football and soccer fields, a covered pavilion, picnic tables and a play area. The Lighthouse Point Community Center is an eagerly anticipated new addition to the park’s facilities.

Last fall KL broke ground on Lighthouse Point Fire Station 22 and Emergency Operations Center, another partnership project with the city. That new two-story structure will be 18,000-sq. ft. and withstand Category 5 hurricane force winds of over 157 miles per hour. The overall project has a value of slightly more than $10 million, according to city documents.
