Special to Florida Construction News
B&I Contractors sees the impact of the skilled trades shortage every day. Across Florida, the demand for electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians continues to grow, yet the pipeline of new talent entering the industry is not keeping pace. This imbalance doesn’t just affect project schedules; it challenges the very foundation of construction.
For more than 65 years, B&I has built its reputation on delivering quality mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems while supporting clients with innovative solutions. None of this is possible without skilled tradespeople. Our employee-owners are the backbone of every building we touch, and every service call we answer. When the workforce falls short, progress slows, not just for our company, but for the communities we serve.
B&I is committed to being part of the solution. We know solving the workforce shortage requires more than recognition, it requires action. With many seasoned tradespeople now approaching retirement, the result is a widening skills gap. We believe in investing in workforce development, supporting apprenticeship programs, creating mentorship opportunities, and strengthening partnerships with trade schools and community organizations.
To further this mission, B&I is proud to have received national accreditation through NCCER, the National Center for Construction Education and Research. Recognized as the industry standard for training and certification, this designation allows us to serve as both an Accredited Training Sponsor and an Accredited Assessment Center at our Fort Myers headquarters. Through this achievement, we can supplement local Apprenticeship Academies with additional trades, while giving employees nationally recognized credentials that validate their expertise and support career growth.
Equally important is reshaping the narrative around what it means to work in the trades. Today’s tradespeople aren’t just using tools, they’re using technology. From smart building systems to energy-efficient designs, the trades are evolving into high-tech, problem-solving professions that shape the future of the built environment. Highlighting this innovation helps us connect with the next generation of workers who want stability, purpose, and advancement in their careers.
We also support initiatives that expand funding for technical education and increase awareness of opportunities in the trades. Collaboration with industry partners, educators, and policymakers will be essential if we are going to close the skills gap and build a sustainable future for our workforce.
At B&I, we don’t view skilled trades as an alternative to traditional education. They are a vital, equal choice offering competitive wages, long-term security, and the satisfaction of meaningful work. The trades are not just part of what we do, they are at the heart of who we are.
As we look ahead, our commitment is clear – B&I Contractors will continue to invest in people, elevate the skilled trades, and strengthen the communities we serve. Because when we invest in tradespeople, we are investing in the future.
