Construction is underway on a new $8 million Fire Station No. 2 at 6560 26th Avenue N., a modern facility designed to replace the department’s aging station and better serve west St. Petersburg.

The 8,700-sq. ft. building will feature two bays, a fitness room, a decontamination area, bunker gear storage, showers, and individual sleeping quarters. A larger kitchen and dining area, along with covered parking for the station’s engine, will provide firefighters with modern, functional facilities.

The station is being built by Biltmore Construction Co., Inc., and was designed by Raul Quintana the City of St. Petersburg’s architect overseeing the project through the Engineering & Capital Improvements Department. Construction is expected to be completed in 2027.

A need for additional coverage in west St. Petersburg was identified more than 15 years ago, but the department lacked resources to build a new station. Fire Rescue operated from a temporary 1,500-sq. ft. structure at 3100 66th Street N., built in the 1950s.

The new site, acquired from the Pinellas County School Board in 2024, was once part of the Tyrone Middle School campus. City Council approved construction funding for the project in 2021.

“Fire Station No. 2 is a critical hub for our emergency response, and this new facility is an investment in both operational readiness and the health and safety of our first responders,” Fire Rescue Chief Keith Watts said at a groundbreaking ceremony.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2027.
