Orlando International Airport is preparing for a major upgrade to its passenger transport system that will begin late next year. The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) announced it will launch a $253 million Gate Link Replacement Project on Dec. 3, 2025, replacing the airport’s aging tram system that connects the North Terminal Complex to gates on Airside 2 and Airside 4.

The project will install four new Mitsubishi Gate Link vehicles and overhaul the system’s supporting infrastructure, including operating systems, running surfaces, power distribution, vehicle controls, communication networks and platform screen doors. The improvements are designed to increase reliability, safety and energy efficiency.

“Orlando International Airport is proud to be the gateway that welcomes millions of visitors to Central Florida,” GOAA CEO Lance Lyttle said in a statement. “While this project requires some temporary adjustments, the long-term benefits will enhance safety and ensure our Gate Link system serves passengers reliably for decades to come.”

The phased construction is scheduled to run from December 2025 through fall 2027. Airport officials said one tram will remain in service during most of the work, limiting delays to a few extra minutes for most travelers. Overnight periods may require shuttle buses, and passengers using rental car or ground transportation services are advised to allow an extra 30 minutes for pickup.

MCO will increase guest service staffing and install additional signage to help guide passengers during the upgrades.

The Gate Link Replacement Project is part of GOAA’s $5.9 billion Capital Improvement Program for 2025–2030. Other planned improvements include expanded parking and baggage-handling capacity, new and modernized gate areas, upgraded terminals, and additional restrooms, seating, retail and dining options, along with updated technology and wayfinding systems.
